#AllAfloat - All Afloat RYA Cymru Wales

All Afloat RYA Cymru Wales

All Afloat is a RYA Cymru Wales sailing and boating pilot project designed to reach out to young people who have not had the opportunity to develop any boating and sailing skills, even though they may live near the seaside and coast.

The #AllAfloat sailing and boating programme is all about encouraging young people to get involved and have a go. This also includes developing life skills such as discipline, teamwork, motivation, engagement, decision making, all with an emphasis on fun and participation, rather than traditional classroom learning, ensuring watersport safety, enjoyment and rewarding outcomes, including RYA sailing and boating accreditation. A smile a day from young participants will be the volunteers reward for taking part in the All Afloat project.

#AllAfloat was first launched as a new initiative in May 2017 by RYA Cymru Wales, to provide opportunities for young people to ‘try out’ and take part in a range of sailing and boating activities in the hope and aspiration that they gain a recognised RYA qualification and the skills required to continue in the sport. #AllAfloat seeks to provide a pathway for children who otherwise might not have the opportunity to become hooked on boating for life.

The #AllAfloat project will be spread over the summer term and holidays across three areas of Wales, and will involve engaging children from specified catchment areas so that they may experience a number of sponsored sailing, boating and windsurfing activities.

RYA Cymru Wales is the National Governing Body for all boating in Wales. Its members include local and regional clubs and commercial watersport centres. RYA Cymru Wales is funded by the RYA and Sport Wales whose vision is “Getting Every Child Hooked on Sport for Life” by “creating a Nation of Champions”.

It is from this vision that the All Afloatsailing and boating programme of activities was born. The lead #AllAfloat sailing and boating pilot at Colwyn Bay Watersports Centre CIC,  draws on the positive outcomes of a previous pilot  project called ‘ Ropes’ which was sponsored by the Rotary Club in Conwy County and funded by Gwynt y Mor & Rhyl Flats. Whilst the ‘Ropes’ project  was successful in providing first time experiences for young people between the ages of 9 and 11,  it did not provide the pathway into mainstream boating. That is why the #AllAfloat initiative is all about giving young people a chance between the ages of 9 & 10 the opportunity to enjoy sailing and windsurfing in a way that means they will want to carry on enjoying boating fun long term, progressing to ‘sailors’ advancing through to club membership and/or ongoing “pay to play” participation in local and regional clubs, or water sport commercial centres.

#All Afloat sailing and boating fun starts with recruitment, taster days, After School Activities, Holiday Clubs in July & August, a Regatta Day and for those sailors who have enjoyed their experiences some who have achieved the most will be able to attend the North Wales #OnBoardRYA Festival at Bala SC on the 2nd & 3rd September and meet other young sailors new to the sport.  There will also be an opportunity for the most enthusiastic young sailors to be sponsored by a local club, giving them membership, so that they may continue enjoying the sport in the hope that they become hooked on sailing for life.

Over the course of the summer months watch out for the series of Blogs dedicated to these inspiring groups of excited young people who have fun developing their sailing, boating and windsurfing skills in a safe environment that is #AllAfloat!

You never know it maybe your turn to get ‘Hooked on Sailing for Life’ next!

Following on from the success of the All Afloat RYA Cymru Wales Taster Sessions at Colwyn Bay Watersports at the end of May 2017, 54 children return to enjoy the #AllAfloat After School Club Sailing & Boating sessions. What that means in reality is the All Afloat After School Club will provide the opportunity for those participating children aged between 9 & 10 to continue developing their sailing skills during a number of supervised pre-arranged sailing sessions all designed to increase their confidence and allow them to complete their RYA Level 1 accreditation – the first stepping stone in a sailing career that will build confidence in both a social and competitive sport. Free transport provided by RYA Cymru Wales ensures an all inclusive opportunity for these children.

The children who excel in the sailing taster sessions will be invited to go on the Learn To Sail Courses run by RYA over the summer months, where they will work towards acquiring their RYA Level 1 & 2 accreditation using practical training exercises recorded in their RYA log books.
